Ten-year-old Lysander was diagnosed with a hearing impairment when he was two-years-old, living in the Philippines. He was diagnosed later than usual because Lysander was also born with congenital heart disease and had to have open-heart surgery when he was one-year-old. He only started wearing hearing aids at the age of three and started speech therapy shortly after.
In April 2019, his family left the Philippines and moved to Manitoba. Unfortunately, Lysander has not been able to access speech therapy due to limited supports where he lives and COVID-19 has further impacted services for children in schools. Being newcomers to Canada, his parents cannot afford the cost of private weekly speech therapy sessions to help Lysander. He is still having problems with his speech and, on top of that, can only speak a few words in English, which is making his transition to life in Manitoba very difficult for him.
By helping to fund Lysander’s request for speech therapy, you are giving him the best possible chance to communicate in his new home.
