Variety, the Children’s Charity of Manitoba is a non-disease specific charity for children under the age of 18 years. Entrenched in the spirit of Variety is their nature to give. What they gave me almost thirty years ago, was the greatest gift of all – the Gift of Life.
At the age of nineteen months, doctors discovered I had two aortas, one of which was critically wrapped around my windpipe. They predicted I would not live to see the age of three. Because of how unique and complicated the surgery was, there was no one in Manitoba who was qualified to perform the intricate procedure. It was Variety Manitoba who stepped up and flew in Doctor Kim Duncan from Toronto to perform the surgery especially for me.
Not only did Variety, the Children’s Charity expedite my surgery and ensure my recovery in their Variety Heart Centre in Winnipeg, they also had a team member stay with my parents for the duration of my surgery. I am indebted to Variety; after all, I owe them my life!
Variety gave me a chance to be a healthy normal child, and I went on to successfully become a professional athlete in the Canadian Football League for 7 years. This includes being named a West Division All-Star in 2012.
There are many other children who desperately need Variety’s help. My situation was alleviated with one surgery – many Variety children spend their entire lives battling various medical and mobility challenges to not only to be a normal child, but to survive.
